Keeping it Red

I love being a red head.  I feel cute, fun, playful and sexy, all at the same time.  Maintaining the red is not easy and there are often times your shower will look closer to a scene from psycho than a relaxing spa.  Here are my 3 tricks to keeping my hair shiny and the red popping:

1. FIND A GREAT COLOURIST & COLOUR PRODUCT

Every colourist has a speciality and specific products they like to use.  And not every colour line has every colour so it can take time to find the exact shade for you.  I also had problems with the colour staying on my blonde highlights but after a few different products, we found one that worked the best for me.  You have to have patience but the payoff is worth it.

2. REFRESH WITH TONER

Whenever I have a big event or I feel the colour is fading before my next colour appointment, I book a quick toner.  Its only a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the time of a regular colour but the results are strong.  This doesn’t replace a regular appointment but it is worth is when you need a pick-me up.

3. MAINTAIN WITH A COLOUR MASK

I use Kromask – Icecream (the image above) in red; you can find it at most drugstores.  I try to use this once a week, its part colour and part conditioner.  Depending on how much time I have, I’ll either sit in the bath with it in my hair or I’ll rinse it through like a regular conditioner.  It only lasts a few days and can stain your skin if you’re not careful, but I love it anyways.  For only $15 its the best bang for your buck and my hair is silky, soft after.

And that’s how I maintain my red. It’s not simple, but then again, neither am I.
