Burlesque and the art of the tease have been revived in a big way over the past few years – thankfully with no sign of slowing or stopping anytime soon. Legends from another time are resurfacing for cameo performances and internationally artists are uniting their talents to bring audiences a bit of the old school glamour that the everyday now oh-so-lacks.
Few know that back in the day, Montreal was a playground for the jet-set, high rollers and playboys with a very strong jazz undertone and famed burlesque scene. While we still very much know how to let loose and have a great time, by 1954 Montreal mayor Jean Drapeau stepped in setting crime straight and shutting down a tad of the badass sparkle that set the city apart from the rest of the world.
Have no fear though! On-the-rise Montreal star Scarlett James holds the keys to unleashing the glitter and reviving a part of the cities historic allure with The Montreal Burlesque Festival! A haven for fans and performers alike, they are currently auditioning acts for the upcoming shows (August 25th – 28th at Club Soda). I for one will be starting to develop my act for next years festival with hopes of making the cut alongside a few of the Burlesque legendaries they’ve featured in the past.
So why not go for it and let your inner burlesque star shine?
Want to get into burlesque on an international front? Follow global happenings through their official festivals, visit the museum in Vegas (watch the vid above for a look inside the personal collection of Dixie Evans) and submerge yourself into the glamourous atmosphere prominent in the 30’s and 40’s with my current read, American Rose – The Life And Times Of Gypsy Rose Lee.
Good luck lovelies!
